Due Diligence Process
Research continues to underscore that individuals coming home from incarceration often
experienced trauma and violence prior to and/or during their carceral experience. To foster an environment that is mutually supportive and safe for hosts and participants, we conduct a due diligence process that includes background checks for hosts and anyone over the age of 18 who resides in the home. While most previous convictions do not disqualify someone from hosting a Homecoming Project participant, individuals who have been convicted of a sex offense are disqualified from hosting. An individual may also be disqualified if they reside with someone who is 18 years or older who has a prior sex offense conviction. More information about our background check process will be shared with you once you move forward to the next steps of the process.

General Conditions of Parole Info & Questions
Most participant applicants are required to complete three years of mandatory parole supervision once they are released from incarceration. Please see more information about
general conditions of California parole here. Some examples to highlight:

  • Parolees and their residence (where they live or stay) and their possessions can be searched at any time of the day or night, with or without a warrant, and with or without a reason, by any parole agent or police officer.
  • Parolees must always give their parole agent the address where they live and work.
  • Parolees must give their parole agent their new address before they move.
  • Parolees must notify their parole agent within three days if the location of their job changes, or if they get a new job.
  • Parolees must not be around guns, or anything that looks like a real gun, bullets, or any other weapons.

The following questions are meant to reference the above above conditions of parole and gather more information to consider which participant applicants could be considered during the matching process:

Specific Conditions of Parole Info & Questions

Under some circumstances, as a condition of parole the State of California, the local County, or local municipality, may impose additional, Special Parole Conditions upon a parolee.

See examples of special conditions of parole here. Some examples to highlight:
  • Alcohol: cannot consume, possess, or have access to alcoholic beverages, liquors, or over-the-counter medications that contain alcohol (e.g. Nyquil)
  • Narcotics: shall not use, possess, distribute any narcotic or controlled substance as defined by law or any paraphernalia related to such substances without a valid prescription
  • Residence: shall not reside in places where vicious or potentially dangerous animals impede access, pose a danger or interfere with parole supervision
Depending on your match’s parole conditions, the use of substances including alcohol and marijuana (medicinal or recreational) may be prohibited. In this case, the host could not have alcohol or marijuana in his/her home either. If substances are found in the home by parole and/or law enforcement, this may violate your participant’s parole requirements and potentially send them back to prison if parole is revoked. We appreciate your honesty and attention to the following important questions.
